Magnetic and electronic phase transitions probed by nanomechanical resonators

2020

The reduced dimensionality of two-dimensional (2D) materials results in characteristic types of magnetically and electronically ordered phases. However, only few methods are available to study this order, in particular in ultrathin insulating antiferromagnets that couple weakly to magnetic and electronic probes. Here, we demonstrate that phase transitions in thin membranes of 2D antiferromagnetic FePS3, MnPS3 and NiPS3 can be probed mechanically via the temperature-dependent resonance frequency and quality factor. The observed relation between mechanical motion and antiferromagnetic order is shown to be mediated by the specific heat and reveals a strong dependence of the Néel temperature of…

2021

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9059/9/8/1074 Este artículo de investigación pertenece al número especial "Oxidative Stress and Inflammation: From Mechanisms to Therapeutic Approaches 2.0". Drugs are bioactive compounds originally discovered from chemical structures present in both the plant and animal kingdoms. These have the ability to interact with molecules found in our body, blocking them, activating them, or increasing or decreasing their levels. Their actions have allowed us to cure diseases and improve our state of health, which has led us to increase the longevity of our species. Among the molecules with pharmacological activity …

Spectral index-flux relation for investigating the origins of steep decay in γ-ray bursts

2020

$\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs) are short-lived transients releasing a large amount of energy ($10^{51}-10^{53} $ erg) in the keV-MeV energy range. GRBs are thought to originate from internal dissipation of the energy carried by ultra-relativistic jets launched by the remnant of a massive star's death or a compact binary coalescence. While thousands of GRBs have been observed over the last thirty years, we still have an incomplete understanding of where and how the radiation is generated in the jet. Here we show a relation between the spectral index and the flux found by investigating the X-ray tails of bright GRB pulses via time-resolved spectral analysis. This relation is incompatible with the…

Photoelectrical detection of electron spin resonance of nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond

2015

The protocols for the control and readout of Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centres electron spins in diamond offer an advanced platform for quantum computation, metrology and sensing. These protocols are based on the optical readout of photons emitted from NV centres, which process is limited by the yield of photons collection. Here we report on a novel principle for the detection of NV centres magnetic resonance in diamond by directly monitoring spin-preserving electron transitions through measurement of NV centre related photocurrent. The demonstrated direct detection technique offers a sensitive way for the readout of diamond NV sensors and diamond quantum devices on diamond chips. The Photocurr…

Entanglement of photons in their dual wave-particle nature

2017

Wave-particle duality is the most fundamental description of the nature of a quantum object, which behaves like a classical particle or wave depending on the measurement apparatus. On the other hand, entanglement represents nonclassical correlations of composite quantum systems, being also a key resource in quantum information. Despite the very recent observations of wave-particle superposition and entanglement, whether these two fundamental traits of quantum mechanics can emerge simultaneously remains an open issue. Here we introduce and experimentally realize a scheme that deterministically generates entanglement between the wave and particle states of two photons. The elementary tool all…

Subpicosecond transient signal spectroscopy of Prodan in dimethylformamide solution.

2008

We report a pump-probe experiment revealing the temporal evolution of subpicosecond evolution of Prodan's excited-state absorption in dimethylformamide. Also, we present calculation of the first spectral moment of this spectral band and estimation of different relaxation components on the subpicosecond time scale.

Self-efficacy and enjoyment of physical activity in children: factorial validity of two pictorial scales.

2019

BackgroundSelf-efficacy and enjoyment are two main constructs proposed within many motivational theories in any human endeavor, sport and physical activity included.MethodsThe purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of two pictorial scales measuring self-efficacy and enjoyment levels in a sample of 14,035 Italian schoolchildren (7,075 boys and 6,960 girls, 6- to 7-year-olds). An important feature of the two scales is that they are in a pictorial format in order to prompt a straightforward understanding in children. The whole sample was randomly split in two subsamples according to gender and age and the factor structure of the measures was examined across subsamples.Result…
